The Māori population has been concentrated in the North Island. In 1996, 87.5 percent of the Māori population lived in the North Island. Over half of this group lived in either Auckland, Waikato or the Bay of Plenty regional council areas.

After World War II large numbers of Māori people moved from rural to urban areas, mostly to work. By 1996 nearly the same proportion of both the Māori and non-Māori populations were urban dwellers.
